Ivy Tech Community College and Dockside Services partner to
offer professional foster parenting program
MERRILVILLE - Dockside Services, Inc., a leading provider
of foster care systems, will be offering a Professional Foster
Parenting Program in conjunction with Ivy Tech Community
College, a 23 campus community college system that serves as
Indiana's workforce development engine. The Professional Foster
Parenting Program is a unique educational training program to
help develop dedicated, knowledgeable, caring and proficient
foster parents for high risk children. Foster parents are also
offered health care insurance, tuition reimbursement and cell
phone reimbursement.
"Children in foster care need devoted and skilled foster parents
to help them face difficult challenges on a daily basis," said
Elena Dwyre, State Executive Director for Dockside. "The parents
who care for these high risk children must be provided with the
tools to successfully accomplish their jobs. We also believe in
treating our foster parents as professionals, giving them the
support they need to excel, and holding them to the highest
standards of practice, as we would our own employees."
The Professional Foster Parenting Program takes a multifaceted
approach to foster care, by increasing the knowledge and
expectations of the foster parents and by increasing the amount
and nature of support and contact by staff. Professional Foster
Parents with Dockside receive specialized training in working
with juvenile sex offenders, working with victims of sexual
abuse, reactive attachment disorder, conduct disorder, working
with biological family members and medication management. Foster
parents are expected to be involved in weekly staff meetings
regarding the child in their care, and a conference call number
is made available to the team of professionals assigned to the
child so they may call in if they are unable to attend in
person.
